Plan early. No planning or list creation regarding your move is going to be too early. The better prepared you are, the less stressed you will be. The standard to-do lists regarding packing and change of address forms are really helpful.
Get rid of the junk. Very straightforward, but true. The less stuff you have, the less stuff you have to carry and unpack. Go through everything you have and ask yourself if you really need it. Start with your clothes. If you haven't worn them in years, it's time to let them go. Get rid of all the random things in your random kitchen drawer (we all have one). Sell off the more desirable items or have a garage sale!
Pack by room and category. If you dedicate a box to each room, you will have a much easier time unpacking when you move into your new home. Use specialized boxes for clothing. With wardrobe boxes, you don't have to spend time taking your clothes off of hangers.
Avoid last minute packing. This is a big NO-NO! Want to avoid stress? Don't pack the day before you have to move! Always make sure you have more than enough boxes, tape, markets, and scissors. Spending a little extra time and money to make sure your items get moved safely will be worth it!
Make it fun. Put on some music to help get everyone in the mood, especially kids. Invite some friends and make a day of it. Your attitude plays a huge part of moving, so focus on keeping the atmosphere upbeat.
Moving can be stressful but planning ahead of time will ease that tension and keep it from building. If you use these tips, you're on your way to a healthier move!
